Child Neurology
INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Child Neurology is a medical journal devoted to pediatric and adolescent neurology. The papers from the fields of pediatric neurosurgery, childhood and adolescent psychiatry, all aspects of rehabilitation are also published. Papers from other medical fields are accepted if they bear relevance to children and adolescence neurology.

The journal publishes original papers, rewiev papers, case reports and short communications. The papers sent for publication can be written in Polish or English (preferably). The papers in English will have priority in publishing.

Separate sections of this journal are: Letters to the Editor, Abstracts of international important papers, Book Rewievs, bibliography of Polish literature concerning pediatric neurology, information about the activities of the Polish Society of Child Neurologists and of its regional branches, as well as reports from the meetings and scientific conferences.

The letters to the editor could have a form of the short scientific reports or polemics with the previously published articles.

HOW TO PREPARE THE MANUSCRIPT:

The volume of original and rewiev papers submitted to the Editor should not exceed 20 pages of the standard typescript (1 page 30-32 lines; 5, margin 2,5 cm) including figures and tables, bibliography and supplements. The text should not be formatted. The text of the paper should be written in Microsoft Office 2000 or its later version. Case reports should not exceed 8 pages, letters to the editor, reports and book reviews should not exceed 3 pages. In justified cases the Editor reserves the right to publish longer papers.

The title page - the first page - should contain in the following sequence:
  • the title in Polish (max. 120 letters),
  • the title in English (max. 120 letters),
  • full names of the authors,
  • complete addresses of academic or professional affiliations,
  • headline (Running head - up to 60 letters),
  • the first author's address should be put, including a valid email address.
All papers regardless of their character, must contain abstracts on the second (in Polish) and the third page (in English):
  • the length of the abstract should be at least 200 and not more than 250 words in Polish as well as in English for original, rewiev papers and case reports,
  • abstracts (Polish and English) should be structured to include the aim, material and methods, results and conclusions,
  • the length of the abstract of short communication should not exceed 100 words,
  • key words (Polish and English) - max. 4-8 words should be in accordance with Index Medicus (Medical subject Heading),
  • title in English or Polish,
  • papers in English by Polish authors must contain the title, abstract and key words in the Polish language.
The fourth and next pages of the original paper should contain the text in the following sequence:

Introduction and aim of the study: Introduction should be as concise as possible and introduce the context of the paper to the reader; the paper should clearly state the research hypothesis and the aim of the study.

Material and methods: Description of the studied population or material should be detailed and contain all the necessary information to assess the reliability of the results and to allow the experiment to be repeated by other researches. The section related to statistical analysis should include information on applied statistical tests and programs.

Results: They should refer direct to the subject of the paper. It is advised to complete the text with tables and figures.

Discussion

Conclusions: They should be concise, follow the results presented above and correspond to the aim of the study defined in the introduction.

The authors of papers dealing with case descriptions are obliged to keep the personal data of the patients confidential. Faces on the photos should be covered. If it is not possible because of the substantial importance of the pictures, the author should receive the written approval of the patient for publishing of his/her image. During reviewing, the editor has the right to ask the author to present the permission for the presented research received by the appropriate Ethic Committee.

Acknowledgements and contributions: They should include information on the sources of financing (grant numbers); acknowledgments should refer to those whose contribution to the paper was significant, but did not fulfill the criteria to be listed as authors. The consent of the person to be named in the paper should be obtained. The authors should disclose any financial and other relations which - if not disclosed- could give rise to suspicions of a conflict of interests.

Abstracts of international important papers should not exceed two pages of the standard typescript. They should contain initials and names of authors, the title of the paper in Polish, the title of the journal, the year, volume, number of the issue and the pages. Book reviews should not exceed three pages of the standard typescript. They should contain the name and surname of the author(s), the title, the editor, the year of publication, the number of pages.

References:
  • references should be listed in the order quoted in the paper. Only papers to which author refers to in the text could be included,
  • authors should carefully prove the correctness of the citations,
  • avoid citing review papers and conference reports, if they are not the only materials on a given topic,
  • in the paper references should be given in square brackets with no space between the comma and the consecutive number, e.g. [2,4,7-10],
  • abbreviation of the titles of the periodicals should be in accordance with Index Medicus,
  • each publication should be placed in a new line and should contain the author's surname, initials of first names, the title of the work, the abbreviation of the title of the periodical (according to Index Medicus), the year, the volume and the pages,
  • in case the number of authors exceeds three, after listing with surnames and initials of the first names of the first three authors add “et al.”,
  • book references should include the surname(s) of the author(s), initials of the first names, the title of the book, the editor, the place and year of publication,
  • the recommended style regarding the arrangement of bibliographic data, space and punctuation is as follows:

Tables should be marked with Roman numbers according to the order in which they appear in the paper, each should be placed on a separate page. Authors should indicate the position of tables in the paper and references to them, e. g. tab. I. Title and the headings of the table should be written in Polish and in English in Polish version of paper. Information included in the tables should not be repeated in the text. Explanations to the tables, e. g. full names of the abbreviations should be given in the footers under the table and marked in the order: "*", "**", "***" etc.

Drawings, photographs, pictures, scans etc. should be marked with Arabic numbers according to the order in which they appear in the paper. They should be placed on a separate page, and in the electronic version - in separate files. Title of the drawings should be written in in Polish and in English in Polish version of paper. The position of the figures in the text should be indicated e. g. Figure 2. Figures should be saved in one of the following formats: .jpg, .bmp or .tif. Photographs sent to the editor in the electronic form should be of 300 dpi resolution and have file extensions .tif or .jpg. Please do not insert the drawings and the photographs in MS Office documents. The title and the explanations should be written in Polish and in English in Polish version of paper . Figures and photographs are placed in the paper in the form delivered, so they must be prepared carefully. Their location in the text should be marked. If a figure (photograph) has been published, its source should be given, and a written consent from copyright holder should be obtained.

The author's name and first words of the paper's title should be written (best in pencil) at the back of each illustration; the top of the figures should be marked (with an arrow).

Abbreviations should be always explained when used for the first time in the text (including abstract). Unless in exceptional situations, abbreviations should not be used in the title of the paper.

The papers should be submitted via ordinary or electronic mail. Preferred electronic medias - CDs, DVDs, floppy discs 3,5 (each signed with title of paper and name of the author). Each file and CD/DVD disc should be signed with the title and the first author's data.

Printouts should be sent in 2 copies.

The cover letter, enclosed to the paper, should contain the first author's declaration on behalf of the others that:
  • the paper has not been published to date (with the exception of the abstracts of conference materials),
  • this paper has not been sent to publication elsewhere,
  • all persons listed as the authors have read it and approved for publication,
  • the head of the institution acceptance.
All papers are evaluated by independent reviewers, preserving the anonymity of both the authors and the reviewers. The editors reserve the right to correct stylistic errors and the designations as well as to make the necessary abbreviations without arranging it with the author.

The editors reserve the right to reject the paper without the reviewers' opinion if - according to the team of editors - the content of the paper does not meet minimum acceptance criteria or if the subject of the paper is beyond the aims and scope of the journal.

Each author of the paper bear responsibility for the reliability and completeness of the data presented. If there are more than six authors, the contribution of each of them should be described in cover letter.

Papers presenting results of clinical research concerning pharmacological agents and medical procedures should meet the requirements published by CONSORT group (Moher D. et al. Ann Intern Med 2001, 134: 657-662). The authors are expected to provide an extensive description of the manner of funding the studies and the role of the sponsor in planning, realizing and analyzing the results as well as the influence of the sponsoring institution on the content of the article.

Observational meta-analysis of epidemiological studies should be prepared on the basis of recommendations of MOOSE group (Stroup D.F. et al. JAMA 2000, 28: 2008-2012). Recommendations of QUORUM group should be used while preparing meta-analyses of studies with randomization (Moher D. et al Lancet 1999, 354: 1896-1900). Indications concerning preparation of papers on the accuracy of diagnostic tests are included in STARD (Bossuyt P.M. et al. Clin Chem 2003, 49: 7-18).

Uppon acceptance of an article the Editors take over the copyright.

A total of 20 reprints of each paper will be provided free of charge to the author.

In case a paper is not accepted for print, neither the text nor electronic carries will be returned to the author.

Authors are obliged to submit corrections within a week.

Publishers, the Polish Society of Children Neurologists, acquires exclusive copyrights to the printed papers. Printing abstracts is allowed without Publisher's consent.
